The Area - The Beautiful Lot Valley
La Maison Rose is located in a tiny Hamlet of Niaudon, about 2Km Northeast of the picturesque Market town of Prayssac and in the very heart of the Lot Valley region. We are only some 25km from the Lot Capital, Cahors.
Cahors, the Capital has a population of 21,500 and has a long history and connection with the British. Thomas de Becket, once Archbishop of Canterbury was the Garrison commander of Cahors and parts of the old fortifications can still be seen today. Modern Cahors is well worth a visit as the town has some excellent shops and restaurants, large Market on Saturday and Wednesday. A visit to the famous 14th Century “Pont Valentré” the worlds only fortified bridge with towers spanning the Lot River is a must do!
Prayssac and the River Lot
The Small market Town of Prayssac has a delightful tree lined square where there are cafes for you to sit and relax and watch the world go by. Prayssac also boost one of the best Markets in the area each Friday a must for you to visit and take home some fine examples of Lot Valley food and wine. In addition there are clothes shops, restaurants, post office, tourist office, butchers, bakers, banks, hair stylist, estate agents and two supermarkets. Prayssac also has a Sports centre, tennis courts and sports field.
La Maison Rose is some 3km from the River Lot. The River is almost 500 Kms in length. Taking a ride on a riverboat from Cahors or canoeing from one of the small towns located along the river is the best way to admire the splendid views along this wonderful river. Fortified villages perched on cliff faces basking in the sun makes another must trip! The Lot river navigation currently reaches the town of Luzech. This is being extended down river and plans include ‘White water rafting‘, walking trails and heritage tours. Canoes and Kayaks are available for hire and Fishing permits for one or more days are available.
Our area has several restaurants and caters for a wide range of tastes. Duck (naturally), chicken, wild boar, venison, veal, local beef (blonde d’Aquitaine), lamb, goat and seafood. Not forgetting some wonderful types of cheese. We have a list available of restaurants in the local area and pleased to make reservations for you. As we are in the heart of the Cahors wine region there are some excellent Reds and Rose to be found both in the restaurants and from direct sales from some of the vineyards locally.
Local Markets
Everyone loves a market. One of the largest and most varied is at Libos near Fumel, about 20 Kms West from Prayssac on a Thursday. Here you will be spoilt for choice with the range of produce, chesses, meats and much more besides. Other markets are in Montcuq, Puy l’Eveque, Cazals and Gourdon.
Throughout the year there are numerous festivals and fetes in most of the local communes, some celebrate produce, wine, others religious or musical. We have a list of what’s on for your information.
If you travel to the Lot by car then it is well worth a visit to St-Cirq-Lapopie to the East of Cahors. This attractive village is located high up overlooking the Lot River. Many old half-timber framed houses, narrow streets and souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants. Spectacular views of the Lot River and surrounding countryside. Others areas of interest are the prehistoric caves depicting painted animals from a bygone age at Causse du Quercy. Rocamadour is another place to visit in the Alzou Gorge off the A20 north of Cahors. This village is situated on the Gorge cliff face. A once fortified Château overlooks the gorge with houses and Church below. Ideal place to take your camera for some fantastic pictures, it does get very busy in July and August.
